Great Start to 2008
By
Gary W. Burris

We started a women only Thursday night introduction to IDPA in order to get more women involved. And it was moderately successful but over the course of last year the attendance dropped off and it became clear that if we continued that the shooting range was actually going to lose money. And I began to feel that the extra time required to manage the class was probably not worth my effort.

Shorty Shipp suggested that we open Thursday up to all IDPA shooters and just have another IDPA match. I was a little apprehensive about having two IDPA matches a week and I doubted that we could draw enough people to keep Thursday going.

Fortunately, my fears were unfounded. We are having as many shooters on Thursday as we get on Tuesday and everyone is having a lot of fun. I still like to think of Thursdays as a training session where new, beginner and experienced shooters who want to improve their skills come and we help them all improve.

One thing that has helped to bring more shooters in on Thursday is the fact that I have invited my CHL students to get involved. Just because they can carry a gun doesn’t mean that they are able to use it when needed.
